After Dallas police officers pull the trigger, they pick up the phone.

And Bob Gorsky — the man who helped them get the right to counsel after a shooting — and his colleagues at Lyon, Gorsky, Gilbert & Livingston are still answering the call.

Since he got to Dallas 40 years ago, Gorsky, 61, has protected and served officers involved in shootings, employment kerfuffles and other legal trouble. The mild-mannered lawyer has long represented the Dallas Police Association and many other Texas officer and firefighter groups. His job has put him prominently in the mix of some of the highest-profile cases in the Dallas Police Department’s history.

“He has seen everything,” said Don Tittle, a civil lawyer who has won numerous six-figure settlements and judgments against police officers and the city. “He understands the politics in a big metropolitan police department. But at the end of the day, he stands by those rank-and-file guys, and he is passionate about it.”

Tittle said Gorsky is exactly what anyone would want in a lawyer — courteous, smart, clever, always thinking a step ahead.

Currently, Gorsky is helping the DPA battle Chief David Brown over accusations involving the police academy. His firm represents several academy instructors who felt wronged by Brown, including a trainer accused of changing a recruit’s test score.

And the lawyers are representing a female recruit who accused a male recruit —the son of a veteran Dallas police officer who is apparently close with Brown — of sexual harassment. The recruit said police commanders violated their own policy by failing to forward her complaint to the internal affairs division. The city stepped in and ordered Dallas Fire-Rescue’s investigators to look into the allegations.

The fire department announced Friday that the allegations were “unfounded,” much to Gorsky’s disbelief. But the fight goes on; questions that Gorsky’s firm have raised have led to a police public integrity investigation into alleged irregularities in the male recruit’s hiring.
