POLICE UNITY TOUR 2008
The Police Unity Tour's motto is "We Ride for Those Who Died;" and every May members of the Unity Tour, bicycle across the Mid-Atlantic States in honor of those law enforcement officers who were lost in the line of duty. This year's Tour started and finished in the cold, driving rain, but the inclimate weather only served to strengthen the resolve of the Tour riders. Even thoughts of fatigue and discomfort were unwelcome travelers on this ride of honor.
As in years past the trip to Washington D.C. was another incredible experience; as approximately 1,100 riders and support personnel left from three different locations and pedaled their way to Washington D.C. There they gathered for the annual Candlelight Vigil which is the official start of National Police Week in our Nation's Capitol.
Spokesman for the Police Unity Tour, Barry Morris, Sgt. DPS Narcotics Garland, Texas expressed deep appreciation for the financial support given by the DPS Officers Association, which allowed him to again participate in this year’s event. Sgt. Morris also said that, “Because of the generous donation by DPSOA (and many more just like you) we were able to present a check for 1.23 million dollars to Craig Floyd, the President of the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) at the completion of this year's ride! As you may also be aware, the funds raised by the Police Unity Tour and donated to the NLEOMF are to be used for the National Law Enforcement Museum being built in our Nation's Capitol. It is scheduled for completion in 2011. The museum will educate and inspire the public, as well as honor those professional law enforcement officers from across the United States, who do an often times thankless job in order to provide public safety for the masses.”
“Thank you again for supporting me, the Police Unity Tour and ultimately the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. I encourage you to visit www.policeunitytour.com and www.nleomf.com at your convenience, in order to learn more about these two fine organizations.”
The DPS Officers Association is proud to have been a part of the 2008 Police Unity Tour and wishes to acknowledge our members and supporters who made our participation possible.
